SNAPSHOT: The latest research shows that social skills are critical to students' academic success. Students who lack social skills such as cooperation, self-control, being a good listener and knowing how to ask for help, are more likely to have problems in their interactions with teachers and peers and to disrupt the classroom. They are also more likely to be placed in special education.

In Teaching Social Skills to Improve Student Engagement, Achievement and Behavior Dr. Howard Knoff, creator and director of Project ACHIEVE, a nationally recognized school effectiveness and school improvement program, will show you how to select and implement a school-wide and classroom-focused social skills program that can help your students develop critical interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills in a developmentally sensitive and appropriate way.

Schools that focus on developing students' social skills see a significant decrease in teacher referrals to the office, student suspensions and expulsions and in placements into special education classrooms.

Project ACHIEVE has been designated a National Model Prevention Program by the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Service's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and a Promising Program by U.S. Dept. of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Along with describing Project ACHIEVE's Stop & Think Social Skills Program, Howie also will provide an overview of the major social skills development programs now available. He will discuss the different approaches to improving students' social skills and walk you through how a social skills program fits into a comprehensive school-wide positive behavioral support system.

CONFERENCE TOPICS: In this webinar, Howie will discuss:

  • The compelling case for developing students' social skills
  • What schools and districts around the country are doing about social skills
  • Deciding between a school-wide approach or more targeted approach
  • Choosing a program that is right for your school or district
  • How to get teachers and administrators on board
  • The components of effective implementation
  • How to measure impact

Other topics to be covered include:

  • The use of behavioral approaches such as modeling, role-playing, performance feedback and generalization
  • How social skills training can be incorporated in the classroom
  • How to teach parents to work with their children on the skills at home.

Participants will have plenty of time to ask questions online about areas of particular concern. Howie also will provide a list of resources for more exploration of this important subject.
