SNAPSHOT: Russell Gersten, PhD, a leading researcher who chaired the expert panel that recently developed the What Works Clearinghouse practice guide on math RtI, will explain how to implement 8 recommendations for working with struggling math students based on the panel's comprehensive review of the research on effective math interventions.

Many schools are implementing RtI for struggling readers, but RtI initiatives for math are still relatively new. To date, little research has been conducted on math RtI per se, but there is a rich body of research on effective math interventions used outside an RtI framework, the panel wrote in its April 2009 practice guide, "Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools."

With the growing emphasis on teaching more students algebra well before high school, it's become imperative to provide interventions to struggling students in grades 4-8. The bulk of research on math interventions is focused on K-4 students, but Dr. Gersten and the panel have extrapolated from this research to make recommendations for grades 4-8 interventions. This is a webinar that is focused on helping you bring this research into your classrooms.

The 8 recommendations that Dr. Gersten will discuss will cover screening, what to teach, skills to build and practices to implement in the classroom. He will also discuss the importance of building motivation for math in interventions.

CONFERENCE TOPICS:

  • Why it's important to screen all students
  • What general screening measures you should use
  • What is important to teach in K-5 and in grades 4-8
  • How to evaluate instructional materials
  • When to provide explicit instruction
  • How the National Mathematics Advisory Panel defines explicit instruction
  • Are teachers providing enough scaffolded practice?
  • The best way to teach word problems
  • The importance of visual representations of math ideas
  • Use of manipulatives as steppingstones
  • Building fluent retrieval of basic arithmetic facts
  • Monitoring progress--how to use results?
  • How to incorporate motivational strategies into interventions
  • Potential roadblocks and solutions to implementing the 8 recommendations

Dr. Gersten is one of the most authoritative researchers on this subject. The goals of the webinar are to give you the most practical implications of the research so that you can immediately put it to work to help struggling math students in your classrooms.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Russell Gersten, PhD, is executive director of the Instructional Research Group, a nonprofit educational research institute in Long Beach, Calif. Dr. Gersten was recently appointed to the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, a Presidential committee created to develop research-based policy in mathematics for American schools. He also recently served as the chair of the expert panel that developed recommendations for a practice guide on math response to intervention for the Institute of Education Sciences, "Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools."

Dr. Gersten has conducted two syntheses of intervention research on teaching mathematics to low-achieving students and students with math disabilities. He served as an advisor for the mathematics component of the Title I evaluation in 2003. He also recently completed a research project on developing valid measures for early screening of students with mathematics disabilities and is currently pursuing research on early preventative interventions. Dr. Gersten has over 150 publications in scientific journals such as Review of Educational Research, American Educational Research Journal, Reading Research Quarterly, Educational Leadership and Exceptional Children. He has directed or co-directed 35 applied research grants (totaling $12,321,122) addressing a wide array of issues in the education of students considered at risk for school failure, and the process of translating research into classroom practice.
