Questions? Call 207-632-1954. | In this 90-minute webinar, Rita MacDonald, a trainer and consultant for the 22-state World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Consortium, will provide you with those practical techniques and strategies. The techniques can be used at all grade levels whether teachers are providing content instruction or language instruction. Recent research emphasizies the need for explicit language instruction and academic language instruction for all students, not only ELLs, so the strategies can benefit any student in the classroom. Educators who are familiar with strategies for differentiating instruction for ELLs will be better able to collaborate with English as Second Language (ESL) teachers. ESL and gen-ed teachers often lack a shared language and shared pedagogy to guide their collaboration. Webinar handouts and activities will provide participants with tools, strategies and ways of thinking about content instruction that create an effective bridge between ESL and gen-ed teaching, increasing success for both teacher and student. CONFERENCE TOPICS: - How to create student profiles and class profiles for instructional planning
- Techniques to identify ELLs' functional levels and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
- Supports and scaffolds to help students function in the ZPD
- Ways to integrate essential instructional strategies for ELLs into the gen-ed classroom
- How to help students and teachers analyze and use language to construct meaning in content lessons
- How to integrate explicit, content-specific language instruction into the gen ed classroom
- Recent research findings about Response to Intervention and ELLs
- Providing explicit instruction in academic English
- How to forge effective teaching partnerships with ESL colleagues.
