SNAPSHOT: Surprisingly, many schools find that the biggest challenge in implementing Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) is not dealing with the unresponsive student who needs additional behavior interventions (Tier 2 and 3).
The biggest challenge is teaching students about the rules and expectations for behavior and getting staff solidly behind this primary prevention effort (Tier 1). Staff must learn to actively support good behavior instead of reacting to bad behavior. They must learn to coach all students in the socially appropriate behaviors that create a school culture that is predictable, consistent, positive and safe.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Donald Kincaid, Ed.D, is assistant program director and professor with the Division of Applied Research and Educational Support at the University of South Florida. He also directs the Florida Positive Behavior Support Project at the University of South Florida and directs USF's participation in the OSEP Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions Center, a partnership of universities and agencies across the country.
Don also co-directs the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities, a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and directs an Institute for Education Science grant for supporting students with severe problem behaviors. His professional interests include person-centered planning, positive behavior support, disabilities, and school and systems change. Don previously served for 10 years as the deputy director of the West Virginia University Affiliated Center for Developmental Disabilities.
