In this webinar, Larry Ferlazzo and Katie Hull Sypnieski explore research-based practices and practical ideas for teaching English Language Learners of all levels. These strategies work for teachers wtih entire classes of ELL students, but they work equally well for teachers of mainstream English, social studies, math and science classes with just a few ELLs. Each of them will help you be more effective in teaching the student who is still struggling with English.
Their strategies recognize that ELLs are as intellectually capable as any non-ELL student -- they just have the added challenge of having to learn a new language and culture.
Larry and Katie will illustrate each teaching strategy with classroom stories and with their extensive experiences teaching ELLs in Sacramento's largest inner-city high school. About the speaker: Larry Ferlazzo teaches English, Social Studies and International Baccalaureate classes to English Language Learners and mainstream students at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California. He has written five books: Self-Driven Learning: Teaching Strategies For Student Motivation, The ESL/ELL Teacher's Survival Guide (with co-author Katie Hull Sypnieski), Helping Students Motivate Themselves: Practical Answers To Classroom Challenges, English Language Learners: Teaching Strategies That Work and Building Parent Engagement In Schools (with co-author Lorie Hammond).
Larry has won numerous awards, including the Leadership For A Changing World Award from the Ford Foundation and was the Grand Prize Winner of the International Reading Association Award for Technology and Reading.
He writes a popular education blog, a weekly teacher advice column for Education Week Teacher and a monthly column for The New York Times. His articles on education policy regularly appear in the Washington Post and the Huffington Post. In addition, his work has appeared in publications such as ASCD Educational Leadership, Social Policy, and Language Magazine.
Larry was a community organizer for nineteen years prior to becoming a public school teacher. He is married and has three children and two grandchildren.
Katie Hull Sypnieski has taught English Learners of all levels for fifteen years in the Sacramento City Unified School District. She has served as a teaching consultant with the Area 3 Writing Project at UC Davis for the past ten years and as a district lead trainer for the WRITE Institute. She is the co-author of the book The ESL/ELL Teacher's Survival Guide (with Larry Ferlazzo). She is a member of the Teacher Leaders Network and has published articles in Education Week Teacher. Katie currently teaches English and ELD at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California. She is married and has three children.

How does a webinar work?
It's simple. On the day of the event, you click on the link we provide. Enter your name and email address and you're in! If your computer has good audio, the audio will be streamed to your computer along with the PowerPoint presentation. If your computer does not have audio, a phone number is provided so that you can access the audio by speaker phone.
Can I use a wireless connection?
We strongly recommend a wired connection. If you are streaming audio, you may lose sound with wireless. If you must use wireless, we recommend the phone connection for audio.
How many can access the event per registration?
Registration is by site, not by individual, so there is no limit to the number of people who can participate at your site. We do request no more than one phone connection per site.
My school district only pays by purchase order. Do you accept POs?
Yes. Our order form includes an option to pay by PO. If you need us to sign the form, you may also fax the PO to 815-461-5647. Please include the full name and email address of the registrant. For more information about ordering with a PO, click here.
What is the difference between the recording link and the CD-ROM?
Both include the synchronized audio and PowerPoint, but the link may only be accessed for 30 days. It is emailed to all registrants the morning after the webinar.The CD-ROM provides a permanent record of the webinar.
When will I receive the CD-ROM?
CDs are shipped 1 week after the live webinar. Canadian and other international customers: Please allow up to 3-4 weeks to receive your CD-ROM. You may use the recording link until the CD arrives.
